Translation and editing by: Stefano Esengrini

" They say I would have taken abstract painting to its limit, when it seems clear to me that I have simply marked a new departure.

 Barnet Newman

On the cover: B. Newman, Onement I , (detail) 1948, New York, Museum of Modern Art

Barnett Newman (New York, 1905-1970), one of the most authoritative and complex painters of the 20th century, is today numbered, together with Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko, among the founding fathers of American Abstract Expressionism. Since the 1940s, Newman has been able to combine his intense artistic activity with an original path of theoretical reflection around his plastic-figurative journey. Starting from the mid-1960s, Newman's art came to exert a profound and lasting influence on the most fertile generations of artists and on the most innovative currents of abstraction in the United States and in the world.
